In 1922, a theatrical seed was planted, destined to blossom into a beloved institution. The A. Bryantsev Youth Theatre (TYUZ) in St. Petersburg first opened its doors on Pionerskaya Ploshchad, offering a haven for young audiences. The theatre’s inaugural performance, “The Little Humpbacked Horse,” premiered on February 23, 1922, quickly becoming its signature piece. The image of the humpbacked horse even graced the theatre’s emblem. The A. Bryantsev Youth Theatre wasn’t just for children. Its founder, Alexander Alexandrovich Bryantsev, envisioned a space for all generations – children, teenagers, and young adults. This multi-generational approach shaped the theatre’s repertoire, ensuring something for everyone. The A. Bryantsev Youth Theatre cultivated a unique atmosphere that drew in prominent figures like Samuel Yakovlevich Marshak, who served as its first director. Over the years, the theatre has featured works by renowned writers such as Kataev, Schwarz, Okudzhava, Pogodin, Roshchin, Razumovskaya, Oster, Entin, and Bartenev. The A. Bryantsev Youth Theatre has also served as a training ground for celebrated actors like Boris Chirkov, Nikolay Cherkasov, Nina Mamaeva, and Alisa Freindlich. From 1962 to 1986, Zinovy Yakovlevich Korogodsky, a respected figure in Russian children’s theatre, led the TYUZ. He upheld Bryantsev’s vision, nurturing a new generation of actors and directors. The A. Bryantsev Youth Theatre has continually adapted and evolved. In more recent times, it has taken on projects like creating an accessible environment for disabled children and participating in international festivals, showcasing its productions to a global audience. Today, the A. Bryantsev Youth Theatre stands as a testament to its enduring mission. It continues to enchant and inspire young audiences with its diverse performances, carrying forward the legacy of its founder and the countless artists who have graced its stage.
