Wasn’t it just 1956 when Harbor Hills residents decided they needed a pool? The creation of the Harbor Hills Park District followed soon after. This marked a significant turning point for the small hamlet. It meant a new shared space a place for community bonding. It involved a sizable investment 169500 dollars in 1956 money. The Schumacher & Forelle construction company completed the project in a mere 110 days. Imagine the buzz that must have filled the air the excitement of a new communal asset. Harbor Hills a small community with roughly 175 residents then shared this unique experience.

This wasn’t the only time Harbor Hills residents collectively invested in their shared space. Between 1986 and 1989 a pool reconstruction project occurred. This too was financed by the hamlet’s residents. This time however the undertaking proved far more contentious. It resulted in a lawsuit. Residents protested tax increases linked to the project. They accused the Town of North Hempstead of overspending and a lack of transparency. The Harbor Hills Civic Association voiced these concerns.

Harbor Hills officially became a census-designated place in 2000. This further solidified its identity as a distinct community. By the 2020 census Harbor Hills had a population of 562. Its size remained modest 0.2 square miles with a considerable portion being water. Despite its small size the hamlet boasts a high population density. This reflects the close-knit nature of its residents.

The demographics of Harbor Hills have remained relatively stable over the years. The majority of its residents are White. A significant portion are married couples with children. The median income remains exceptionally high suggesting a community of considerable affluence. It is governed by the Town of North Hempstead. This makes it an unincorporated hamlet with no independent local government.

Harbor Hills children attend the schools of the Great Neck Union Free School District. The Great Neck Library District serves its residents. The community clearly demonstrates a strong sense of unity. This is visible in their collective investments in shared resources and their active participation in local affairs. Harbor Hills is more than just a CDP. It’s a place where community spirit thrives. A place where history and progress intertwine. A truly special place on Long Island.
