Did the elegant Château de la Rosée always stand here, serene and timeless? No, its story is one of resilience and rebirth. Let’s journey back to 1635. The Chevalier Lamoral François de Tenremonde, lord of Mérignies, commissioned the construction of the Château de la Rosée. An older feudal mound once occupied this very spot, a whisper of the past beneath our feet. The château remained in the Tenremonde family for centuries, a testament to their enduring legacy. However, tragedy struck during World War I. German officers occupied and looted the Château de la Rosée. A devastating fire in February 1917, during a “celebration” held by the occupiers, and bitter cold hampered firefighting efforts. The château was later destroyed by dynamiting by the occupying forces. What we see before us today isn’t the original 17th-century structure. It’s a reconstruction, a phoenix rising from the ashes around 1930 by the descendants of Baron des Rotours, who had acquired the property in 1889. Baron Raoul des Rotours, a descendant, continued a unique tradition. For over a decade, he opened the château’s park to spectators of the Paris-Roubaix cycling race. Hundreds gathered, many from Belgium, to witness the racers navigate the “pavé de la rosée” just a stone’s throw from here. The Château de la Rosée stands as a symbol of the enduring spirit of Mérignies. It’s a place where history, tragedy, and resilience intertwine, creating a captivating story etched into the very stones before us.
