“Is this bridge really named after a god?” I wonder as we approach Kasugade Bridge. Kasugade Bridge stands before us. It is more than just a way to cross the river. It represents Osaka’s spirit.

Let’s step back in time. Picture the Edo period. There was a crossing connecting Tenma Kawazaki and Sakurajima. Near it stood Kawazaki Higashi-zogu Shrine. People prayed for family well-being there. Also nearby was Kawazaki Okura, built as a rice granary.

In 1877, a private bridge was built. People paid three rin per person to cross. It was nicknamed “Zenitori Bridge”. Sadly, a flood in 1885 washed it away.

The Kasugade Bridge you see now was built in 1978. It connects Nakanoshima Park and Senri Expo Park. This was part of a large bicycle route. The bridge has a unique design. Cables extend from high towers. They suspend the girders. It stretches 129.2 meters long and 3 meters wide. This bridge received an award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.

Look around. In spring, the cherry blossoms are spectacular. During summer, the Tenjin Festival boat procession passes by. Many people come to see these events.

Kasugade Bridge is more than just steel and concrete. It is a testament to Osaka’s history. It is a symbol of community. It is a beautiful part of the city. Take a moment to appreciate this bridge. Think about the people who crossed here before us. Consider the future generations who will cross after us.
