What whispers rise from the earth beneath Burgwall in Hamburg? Here, in the heart of this bustling city, lies a story etched not in stone, but in the very soil beneath our feet. The Burgwall, a name synonymous with Hamburg’s earliest beginnings, reveals a tale of fortifications, invasions, and the unwavering spirit of a people who refused to be erased. Burgwall, the “castle in the meadows,” or perhaps, “castle in the bay,” speaks to a time long before the modern metropolis we see today. It was the 8th century when the first ring-shaped fortification arose, a testament to the Saxons who called this area home. This was Hammaburg I, possibly surrounding the courtyard of a Saxon elite family, alongside commercial and residential buildings. Its strategic location on a Geest hill within the river delta of the Alster and Elbe made it a coveted prize. The Burgwall witnessed the tumultuous Saxon Wars, a period of conflict between the Saxons and Franks culminating in Charlemagne’s conquest. Though the emperor’s direct link to Burgwall remains unproven, his son, Louis the Pious, established Hammaburg as the capital of Nordalbingia. Between 817 and 822, likely in response to Viking and Slav incursions, the Burgwall was expanded into Hammaburg II, twice the size of its predecessor. This expansion reflects the growing importance of the site. Then came the year 845, a year etched in the memory of Burgwall. Viking raiders descended upon Hammaburg, leaving a trail of destruction. While the dramatic accounts of widespread fire may not be fully supported by archaeological findings, the devastation undoubtedly impacted the settlement. The Burgwall’s fortifications were leveled, and the moat filled. Yet, life at Burgwall persevered. Even without its protective walls, the site continued to serve as a hub for trade. Remnants of dwellings, pottery shards from local and Slavic production, and even shell-tempered pots from the North Sea coast tell a story of resilience. Around the year 900, a new fortification arose: Hammaburg III, larger and more formidable than before. This marked a resurgence, coinciding with Hamburg-Bremen’s elevation to an archdiocese. By the early 11th century, the Burgwall fortifications were no longer rebuilt. Instead, a wooden cathedral graced the grounds. To protect Hammaburg’s vulnerable eastern side, Archbishop Unwan and Duke Bernhard II commissioned the Heidenwall, a mighty rampart stretching from the Alster to the Elbe. The Burgwall’s story is one of constant change, reflecting the ebb and flow of power, invasion, and the enduring human spirit. The ground we stand on at Burgwall holds echoes of generations past, reminding us that history is not confined to textbooks but lives and breathes in the very earth beneath our feet.
