At 114.5 meters the Großer Ahrensfelder Berg is a giant among Berlin’s hills. It wasn’t always so tall though.

The Großer Ahrensfelder Berg in Marzahn-Hellersdorf is a fascinating example of Berlin’s ever-changing landscape. Originally a modest esker a narrow ridge of glacial sediment it stood at a mere 66.9 meters. This natural formation was dramatically altered during the construction boom of the 1980s.

The building of the large housing developments in Marzahn Hellersdorf and Hohenschönhausen produced mountains of rubble. This debris was conveniently deposited on the Großer Ahrensfelder Berg. The hill slowly grew taller and taller. Adding to the problem residents and even Red Army troops used the site as a dumping ground. This resulted in some localized soil contamination by heavy metals.

The reckless dumping thankfully ceased in 1991. A transformation began. In 2008 the western peak was boosted by another 3.5 meters. A viewing platform was added. This gave visitors a breathtaking panorama. You can see the Berlin Television Tower and even into Brandenburg. The view contrasts sharply the high-rise estates of Marzahn.

The Großer Ahrensfelder Berg stands as a unique testament to Berlin’s history. It’s a man-made mountain reflecting both reckless development and thoughtful redevelopment. Today it’s a popular spot for recreation. Walkers joggers and cyclists enjoy its trails. It’s a place to appreciate the unexpected beauty found in unexpected places. The Großer Ahrensfelder Berg shows how nature and human activity can combine to create something entirely new. Something uniquely Berlin.
