This isn’t just any disc golf course. It’s a living piece of history. In 1974 Ed Headrick a visionary in the world of Frisbee sports approached Los Angeles County. He proposed a permanent disc golf course. Sy Greben the Director of Park Planning saw the potential. Oak Grove Park was chosen. The world’s first official disc golf course was born.
Headrick didn’t just plop down some baskets. He designed and built the course himself along with Mary Becker. They created something special. The initial design included Ed’s innovative Disc Pole Holes. These were the first disc golf targets to use chains to stop a flying disc. It was a game changer. The Disc Pole Hole was patented in 1975. It became the standard for the sport. It solved a major problem. Before there were arguments over whether a disc had actually hit a target. Now the game was standardized and arguments were minimized.
Oak Grove has evolved. The original Disc Pole Holes have been replaced by modern DISCatcher baskets. There are multiple hole configurations. Some say there are 18 holes. Others say 20 or even 21. It’s a bit of a mystery.The course is approximately 5115 feet long. A 1000 rated round scores 58. However some alternate layouts add over 1000 feet to the total length.
The course is known for its challenging layout. Mature trees line many fairways. They make for interesting shots and beautiful scenery. The terrain is slightly hilly. There’s shade. There are water fountains. There are even bathrooms. You might even spot a friendly local helping you find a lost disc.
