Is there a more powerful symbol of the American Dream than basketball? Here at the Woodruff Physical Education Center stands “An American Dream,” a nine-foot-tall bronze sculpture by Dr. Wayne Southwick. It depicts a young woman, captured in the act of scoring a basket, while her male counterpart looks on. The sculpture is more than just a celebration of sport; it embodies the hope for equality, particularly for women in sports. “An American Dream” reminds us that ambitions and dreams are not defined by gender. It’s a hopeful image, a testament to the pursuit of equality that lies at the heart of the American Dream.
