Have you ever heard of a church so influential it helped shape a nation’s spiritual landscape? Right here in Seoul stands Youngnak Presbyterian Church, a testament to faith and resilience. Founded on December 2, 1945, amidst the tumultuous aftermath of World War II and the division of Korea, Youngnak Presbyterian Church became a beacon of hope for refugees fleeing the Soviet-occupied north. Its founder, Kyung-Chik Han, a man of unwavering conviction, would later receive the prestigious Templeton Prize in 1992, further cementing Youngnak’s place in history.

Initially, the church consisted of a humble building and a tent. Twenty-seven refugees, yearning for spiritual solace and freedom, formed the first congregation. As word spread, more refugees from north of the 38th parallel flocked to Youngnak. The church grew rapidly, becoming a symbol of resilience against oppression. By March 1949, the congregation had outgrown its modest space. Construction began on a new facility, a testament to their burgeoning numbers.

When the new Youngnak Presbyterian Church building opened its doors in May 1950, membership had already swelled to over 4,000 souls. This remarkable growth continued. By 1992, when Reverend Han received the Templeton Prize, the church boasted a membership of 60,000. This made it the largest Presbyterian congregation worldwide at the time. This figure didn’t even include the 500 sister churches sprung from the original Youngnak congregation. These numbers speak volumes about the church’s profound impact on the spiritual lives of countless individuals.

In 1998, Youngnak Presbyterian Church expanded its reach even further. Under the guidance of Pastor Emeritus Han Kyung-chik, an English language ministry was established. This ministry, known as International Worship in English, was spearheaded by American missionary Bill Majors. Majors’ dedication to bridging cultures through faith was recognized in 2005 when he was granted Honorary Citizenship of Seoul. This exemplifies Youngnak’s commitment to inclusivity and its role as a global spiritual hub. Today, Youngnak Presbyterian Church continues to thrive. It serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in faith. Its story is inextricably linked to the history of Korea itself.
