Goethe, one of the most influential figures in Western literature, was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1749. His works, including *Faust* and *Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship*, are still widely read and studied today. The monument, a dedication to Goethe’s legacy, was originally designed by a local schoolteacher named Hugo Behr, a significant detail that might go unnoticed for many. The original monument with a bronze bust of Goethe was destroyed in 1942, during World War II. After the war, a new bust was made out of sandstone by a local sculptor named Willy Ullrich. This replacement bust was erected in 1949, on Goethe’s 200th birthday. And this is what we see today.
