Picture the elegant Villa Worch a grand manor built in 1925. This is the Kulturhaus Centre Bagatelle. It stands proudly in Berlin-Frohnau. Its history is rich and fascinating. Originally a stately home for Herbert Worch a director of the Deutscher Herold insurance company the villa witnessed changing hands before the Nazi party acquired it in 1940.
Remarkably unscathed by the war the villa was then taken over by Soviet forces. However their stay was short-lived only until July 12 1945. Following Allied agreements the area passed to the British then the French. In 1946 the French established an officers’ club naming it Cercle la Bagatelle after a Parisian chateau.
Interestingly this mirrored a Parisian chateau. It is a nod to the French elegance of the original location. The French increasingly used the building for cultural events. By 1950 German visitors were welcomed. In 1956 it officially became the Centre Culturel de Reinickendorf. This name Centre Bagatelle remains to this day.
Following Germany’s reunification the French forces ceremoniously handed over the Centre Bagatelle to Reinickendorf’s district office. This was in May 1993. The condition was that it would continue to serve the cultural needs of Reinickendorf’s residents. It was also to foster German-French friendship.
The French legacy continues. The Centre Bagatelle hosts classical concerts jazz matinees chanson evenings readings lectures theatrical performances exhibitions and summer art festivals. German-French relations remain a key focus. The Centre’s diverse high-quality program thrives.
Today the Kulturhaus Centre Bagatelle is a vibrant cultural hub. It connects people from all ages. Working with other associations the Kulturhaus Centre Bagatelle e V further expands its cultural offerings. Collaborations include the German Foundation for Monument Protection and the NABU. This began in the autumn of 2007. The focus remains on deepening German-French relations. Its popular course program constantly expands. This includes collaborations with the Institut Français and the German-French Music School.
The Kulturhaus Centre Bagatelle is a testament to its remarkable past. It stands as a cultural cornerstone in northern Reinickendorf and the surrounding Brandenburg region. The venue is a symbol of international cooperation and shared cultural heritage.
