Journey with me back to 1884. A small group of Ukrainian Greek Catholics gathered in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. They had traveled far from their homeland, seeking a better life in America. They yearned for a spiritual anchor, a place to celebrate their faith and traditions. On December 18th, in the humble setting of Kern Hall, they held their first liturgical service. This marked the birth of St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, the first Greek Catholic parish in America. St. Michael’s became the heart of this burgeoning community. As more Ukrainian immigrants arrived, the congregation outgrew Kern Hall. In 1907, the parish purchased land on Oak and Chestnut Streets. Their dream of a grander church began to take shape. By Palm Sunday of 1909, the new St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church opened its doors. The faithful filled the pews, their voices rising in prayer and song. Tragedy struck on April 7, 1980. A devastating fire consumed St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church. Priceless antiques, religious art, and cherished icons were lost to the flames. The rectory also succumbed to the inferno. However, the spirit of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community remained unbroken. Led by their pastor, Father John Bura, they immediately began rebuilding. Their resilience shone brighter than any flame. On November 27, 1983, the cornerstone of the current St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church was blessed. The first Divine Liturgy was celebrated within its newly constructed walls. Today, St. Michael’s stands as a testament to the unwavering faith and perseverance of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community. It serves as a vibrant reminder of their journey from a small gathering in Kern Hall to a thriving parish. St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church continues to be a beacon of hope and a symbol of their enduring legacy in America.
