“Only the Mafia makes more money than us” Steve Rubell famously boasted. That bravado defined Studio 54. Right here on West 54th Street in Midtown Manhattan Studio 54 reigned supreme. A former CBS television studio it became a 1970s disco legend. Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell transformed this space into a hedonistic haven. It was a dazzling escape from a bankrupt New York City struggling with crime.

Studio 54 wasn’t just a nightclub. It was an experience. A carefully choreographed spectacle of light and sound. The sets constantly changed. One night a giant ice igloo. The next a canopy of drag queens dressed as Marie Antoinette. Four tons of glitter once covered the dance floor. A “Man in the Moon” prop hung overhead a cheeky nod to the rampant drug use.

The door policy was legendary. Steve Rubell handpicked the guests. Even famous faces were rejected. The queue snaked around the block every night. Getting inside was a status symbol. Inside rich and poor gay and straight young and old mixed. This diverse crowd created an intoxicating alchemy.

Celebrities flocked to Studio 54. Andy Warhol a regular simply observed. Mick Jagger Diana Ross Liza Minnelli Elton John Grace Jones John Travolta and Michael Jackson were regulars. Diana Ross even jumped into the DJ booth. Madonna performed a lip-sync act. The music of Earth Wind & Fire often filled the air. But even stars had to follow the rules. Donald Trump a less energetic visitor.

Studio 54 hosted outrageous parties. A Grease themed party featured 1950s convertibles. The gasoline was pumped directly into the sewers. The fire department wasn’t amused. Live animals were frequent decorations. A zebra once earned a health department citation. One New Year’s Eve the club became a winter wonderland complete with a 200-foot ice wall.

Studio 54’s success was short-lived. The tax evasion charges ended its reign. The club closed in 1980. Schrager and Rubell served prison time. The “End of Modern-Day Gomorrah” party marked the end of an era. Despite attempts to revive it Studio 54 as a disco never recovered. Its legacy however lives on. A symbol of 1970s excess glamour and a unique blend of freedom and debauchery. A legend forever etched in New York City history.
