“Helping hand up, not a handout” is more than just a saying here at Trinity United Methodist Church. It is a guiding principle. Founded in 1963 Trinity United Methodist Church initially met at Redrock Southern Baptist Church. This was a temporary arrangement. The congregation then moved to a storefront in the Charleston Heights Shopping Center. Finally in 1965 Trinity members broke ground on their own church building.
Trinity United Methodist Church has been at its current location on West Charleston Boulevard since November 7, 1965. That makes this place a landmark. The church began with about 200 members. It grew from a vision to plant a church toward Jones and Charleston. Back then Jones was a dirt road marking the edge of town.
Greta Medberry a founding member recalls those early days. She remembers excellent educational programs. A Scout troop was formed. Several children’s choirs were created. Everyone was eager to participate.
Trinity United Methodist Church has a history of community involvement. Several years ago the church sought to expand its outreach. Trinity partnered with Doris Hancock Elementary School. Many of the school’s students come from financially struggling families. The church provides these students with school supplies and clothing.
The Society of St Stephen is the outreach ministry of Trinity United Methodist Church. It recognizes an early Christian disciple. This disciple spearheaded efforts to care for disadvantaged members of the church. One program is Angel Tree. It provides Christmas gifts to underprivileged children.
Trinity United Methodist Church has a long-standing focus on helping others. In the 1960s the church created a program. It trained African-Americans to become dealers. At that time segregation prevented them from getting these jobs.
Trinity United Methodist Church has a diverse congregation. English and Korean are spoken here. Pastor Jen joined Trinity in July 2019. She came from Gila Mountain United Methodist Church in Yuma Arizona. Jane Diaz leads the music programs. She has been living in Las Vegas since 2006.
Trinity United Methodist Church closed its preschool and day care program in March 2012. It drew too few students to remain viable. However the Society of St Stephen food pantry continues to help families in need. The Helping Hand Up ministry provides emergency financial assistance.
Trinity United Methodist Church remains committed to serving its community. The neighborhood has changed over the years. The church is intentionally seeking new ways to meet the community’s needs. Trinity’s doors are open. Its mission continues. It is a beacon of hope. It is a place of welcome.
