Have you ever heard of a temple built specifically for whispers? Wat San Pa Khoi in Chiang Mai was just that. Not for hushed secrets, but for the soft, melodic whispers of the Shan people. Wat San Pa Khoi stands as a testament to their unique culture. Their journey began in the Shan States of northeastern Burma, drawn to Chiang Mai by the promise of work in the teak logging industry. In the 1880s, they found themselves without a spiritual home, a place to resonate with their distinct form of Buddhist worship. Inthawichayanon, the 7th ruler of Chiang Mai, and his Shan consort, Mom Bualai, recognized this need. Along with the Shan community, they established Wat San Pa Khoi. This was the first temple in Chiang Mai dedicated to the Shan people. The name “Wat Pa Pao” comes from the very grove of pao trees where it was built. “Pa,” you see, means “forest” in the Shan language. The temple’s chedi stands proudly, its bell shape rising from a triple-tiered square base, crowned with a golden spire and hti. Four qilin, mythical lion-bodied, dragon-headed creatures, guard each corner. The main assembly hall showcases a magnificent seven-tiered, Burmese-style pyatthat roof, also topped with a hti. Nearby, another assembly hall, crafted mostly of teak, boasts an intricate multi-tiered zeitawun roof. Dyed a rich red, the roof is adorned with friezes depicting scenes of the revered Mount Meru. Wat San Pa Khoi holds a Thai Ping style Buddha image from 1487. Many other Buddha images bear distinct Shan or Burmese characteristics. The temple isn’t just a place of worship, it’s the heart of the Shan community. Every year, they celebrate the Poy Sang Long festival. Young boys are initiated as novice monks, and a vibrant procession of traditionally dressed Shan people weaves through the city. Even the temple’s school echoes the Shan language, educating children in their native dialect. Wat San Pa Khoi whispers tales of resilience, cultural preservation, and the enduring spirit of the Shan people.
