In 1887, just a year after Johannesburg’s chaotic birth, a small group of Jewish pioneers huddled in B. Wainstein’s shop. They dreamt of a spiritual home, a place of solace amidst the dust and clamour of the gold rush. That dream, taking root amidst the din of picks and shovels, blossomed into the Great Park Synagogue. Great Park Synagogue began its journey as the Witwatersrand Goldfields Jewish Association, its initial purpose extending beyond prayer to encompass the care of the Jewish cemetery. The first Rosh Hashanah service, a testament to the community’s burgeoning spirit, resonated through the hallowed halls of the Rand Club, drawing a crowd of 500 souls. The association’s name transitioned to the Witwatersrand Hebrew Congregation, marking its clear religious focus. In 1888, two plots on President Street were secured, laying the foundation, quite literally, for Johannesburg’s first synagogue. The President Street Synagogue opened its doors in 1889, yet its early days were fraught with internal divisions, culminating in a secession that birthed the Johannesburg Hebrew Congregation. President Kruger, a figure deeply embedded in South African history, granted land for their new spiritual home near Park Station. This synagogue, initially known as the Park Station Synagogue or simply the Park Synagogue, enjoyed a brief existence before being sold to make way for progress. From its ashes rose the grand Great Synagogue, its imposing structure dominating a city block. This was the true predecessor to the Great Park Synagogue we stand before today. The Great Synagogue became a focal point of Johannesburg’s Jewish life. It was there that the community mourned the Holocaust’s victims and celebrated Israel’s birth. It was there that Chief Rabbis held court, guiding the community through turbulent times. However, as the city centre declined, so did the synagogue’s fortunes. The northward migration of Jewish families led to dwindling attendances. In 1994, the doors of the Great Synagogue closed, marking the end of an era. But the spirit of the Great Synagogue lived on. In 2000, the Great Park Synagogue was consecrated in Houghton, echoing the architectural grandeur of its predecessor. The bimah, pulpit, and other fittings were lovingly transported, serving as tangible links to the past. The new synagogue, while smaller, incorporated stained-glass windows by Judith Mason, a testament to the community’s enduring artistic spirit. Great Park Synagogue today, a phoenix risen from the ashes of change, stands as a beacon of Jewish life in Johannesburg. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and the enduring dream kindled in a small shop so many years ago.
