Amidst the grandeur of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a bronze figure stands tall. It’s General Casimir Pulaski, a Polish nobleman whose life intertwined with the American Revolution. The General Casimir Pulaski statue captures him mid-stride, sword in hand. His stern expression reflects his unwavering resolve. General Casimir Pulaski, a cavalryman of exceptional skill, dedicated his life to the fight for freedom. Commissioned as part of the William M. Reilly Memorial, the statue serves as a lasting tribute to Pulaski’s heroism. The memorial itself was established through the will of General William M. Reilly of the Pennsylvania National Guard. He wanted to honor Revolutionary War heroes. Reilly’s will specified that the memorial should express gratitude to the volunteers who aided the American cause. The General Casimir Pulaski statue is one of six bronze figures in the memorial. They stand on granite bases designed by C. Louis Borie, Jr., an architect of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The sculptor, Sidney Waugh, a decorated World War II veteran, masterfully captured Pulaski’s essence. General Casimir Pulaski initially served under George Washington. After proving himself in the Battle of Brandywine, Pulaski formed his own cavalry corps, Pulaski’s Legion. This legion was deployed to the South. There, during the siege of Savannah, General Casimir Pulaski met his untimely end. The General Casimir Pulaski statue reminds us of the sacrifices made by those who fought for American independence. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of liberty and the global connections forged during the Revolution. As you stand before this powerful artwork, reflect on the courage of General Casimir Pulaski, a true hero who gave his life for a cause he believed in.
