“Who here dreams of skating like a pro?” Let me tell you about the Eisbären Juniors Berlin e.V. It is more than just a sports club. It is a launchpad for young talent.

Founded in 2000, the Eisbären Juniors Berlin emerged. They rose from the ashes of the EHC Neue Eisbären Berlin. The club aimed to nurture young hockey players. They wanted to prepare them for professional careers.

The Eisbären Juniors are closely linked to the Eisbären Berlin. Yet they operate independently. The Juniors rely on financial support from the main team. They struggle with low spectator numbers.

Initially, the Eisbären Juniors had a farm team. This team mirrored North American models. In 2004, they ascended to the Oberliga. This is Germany’s third-highest league. However, the Oberliga team was disbanded in 2009. This was due to changes in the Deutsche Nachwuchsliga structure.

The Eisbären Juniors Berlin aren’t just about ice hockey. They encompass other sports too. These include Eisschnelllauf, Inline-Skaterhockey, and Floorball.

Eisschnelllauf has seen famous names. Claudia Pechstein and Monique Angermüller were part of the team. Since December 2016, Floorball has been a key part. Inline-Skaterhockey joined the ranks in 2018.

The Eisbären Juniors’ home is the Wellblechpalast. It is a stadium steeped in hockey history. It can hold 4.695 fans. This includes 1.600 seats. Until 2008, even the Eisbären Berlin played here.

The Eisbären Juniors ice hockey department has seen varied success. In 2017, the entire women’s ice hockey team of OSC Berlin joined the Eisbären Juniors. This aimed to boost the profile and finances. The women’s team reached the German Championship final in 2020/21.

The club also fields an amateur men’s team. From 2003 to 2009, it served as the Eisbären Berlin’s farm team. They played in the Oberliga. Since 2017, the men’s team has competed in the Regionalliga Ost.

The Eisbären Juniors also participate in the Deutsche Nachwuchsliga. They have secured multiple second-place finishes. In 2022, they clinched the German Junior Championship.

The Inline-Skaterhockey department competes in various leagues. These include the Berliner Inline-Skaterhockey Liga. They also participate in the Inlinehockey-Bundesliga. Their games take place at Hockeyhalle Wolli. The hall’s name cleverly nods to the Wellblechpalast.

The Eisbären Juniors Berlin e.V. is more than a club. It is a community. It fosters young athletes. It keeps the spirit of Berlin’s ice sports alive.
