Did Gian Galeazzo Visconti ever imagine his hunting grounds would become home to such a masterpiece? The Certosa di Pavia, just a short trip from Milan, is a breathtaking blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Commissioned in 1396 by Visconti, the first Duke of Milan, it was intended as both a monastery and a family mausoleum. He envisioned the Certosa mirroring Milan’s grand Gothic Cathedral. However, construction spanned two centuries, allowing the emerging Renaissance ideals to influence its final form. The result is a fascinating fusion. The imposing Renaissance facade greets visitors with a flurry of statues and carvings. Saints and Roman emperors stand guard, hinting at the treasures within. Inside the Certosa di Pavia, Gothic architecture gives way to Renaissance flourishes. Paintings, frescoes, and intricately carved wooden choir stalls adorn the church. Stained glass windows, collected over centuries, cast a kaleidoscope of colors. The Certosa di Pavia is more than just a church; it’s a testament to evolving artistic tastes. Beyond the church, the Small Cloister beckons with its serene garden and arcaded walkways. This leads to the Grand Cloister, where monks’ cells once opened onto a central garden. The Carthusians were expelled in 1782, replaced by various other orders until the Cistercians arrived in the 1960s.
