Born in this very spot. That’s the captivating hook isn’t it? Welcome to the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site. This isn’t just a house. It’s a birthplace a testament to the life of the 26th president of the United States Theodore Roosevelt.
The original home stood here. It was built in 1848. The Roosevelt family bought it in 1854. Young Theodore lived here until 1872. The area changed. It became more commercial. The family moved uptown. The original house sadly met the wrecking ball in 1916. Retail space replaced it.
But the spirit of Theodore Roosevelt couldn’t be erased so easily. After his death in 1919 the Women’s Roosevelt Memorial Association stepped in. They purchased the lot. They recreated the house. They wanted to honor his memory. They hired Theodate Pope Riddle a noted female architect. It was unusual for women at that time. Riddle used a neighboring twin house as a model. Some elements were incorporated into the replica. This incredible replica was dedicated in 1923. It was furnished using items from the original house. Edith Roosevelt his widow and his sisters helped. They provided valuable details about the house’s interior.
Inside the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site you can see the parlors. The gas lamps create an atmospheric setting. The dining room evokes the family’s meals. Original furnishings are plentiful. The bedrooms are upstairs. You can even see the very bed where Theodore was born in 1858. His original crib is here too. His mother’s portrait hangs above a fireplace. His mother’s story is fascinating. She was a Southern belle who married a New Yorker. A young reporter Peggy Mitchell later Margaret Mitchell interviewed her. Mitchell’s later work Gone with the Wind was loosely based on Mrs. Roosevelt’s life.
The Theodore Roosevelt Association donated this birthplace to the National Park Service in 1963. It became a National Historic Site. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Today it serves as a museum. It celebrates the life and contributions of a remarkable man. It’s a place where history comes alive. A place to experience the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt.
