Is it possible for a church to be born in a living room? At Smyrna Baptist Church, that’s exactly what happened. Right here in Houston, back on July 1, 1984, a dedicated group of twenty-six souls gathered in the home of Brother and Sister Evans Jackson. They were without a church home, but not without faith. They needed a place to worship, and so, Smyrna Baptist Church took its first breath. Their very first service was held just a few days later on July 15th, led by Rev. Larry W. Jackson, Sr. The message that day? “Serving the Savior Sometimes Means Suffering”. A powerful testament to their commitment, wouldn’t you say? They quickly found their first official home on Corto Street, thanks to the generosity of Rev. Rose of New Macedonia Baptist Church. But the story doesn’t end there. The congregation chose the name “Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church”, inspired by a passage in Revelations, and officially organized on July 25th. By December 1987, they had purchased land at 3315 Laura Koppe Road, where the church proudly stands today. They moved into their permanent home, a former church building, in October 1989 and renovations began almost immediately. Smyrna Baptist Church, born from the faith of a small group, has blossomed into a beacon of hope and community.
