Hidden amidst the gentle slopes south of the Ruhr River lies Villigst, a charming suburb of Schwerte. Isn’t it intriguing how such a tranquil place holds centuries of stories? Villigst first appeared in records as “Vilgeste” in 1170, marking the presence of a fortified structure. Imagine knights patrolling its ramparts, their armor gleaming in the sun. This early stronghold stood until 1819, making way for the elegant Haus Villigst, a classic example of an aristocratic estate. Villigst wasn’t always part of Schwerte. It belonged to its own rural community within the parish and office of Schwerte, under the jurisdiction of the County of Mark. Tax records from 1486 reveal a community of thirteen taxpayers, each contributing their share to the coffers. The name “Villigst” officially became associated with the village itself in 1719. By 1885, Villigst spanned over 330 hectares. This land encompassed 106 hectares of arable fields, 12 hectares of meadows, and 57 hectares of woodlands. Within this area, there were four residential sites and 23 houses, accommodating 34 households and a population of 215. The population grew significantly after 1949. Numerous new housing developments transformed the landscape, particularly during the 1960s. Finally, in 1975, Villigst officially became part of Schwerte. Today, Haus Villigst serves a higher purpose. It houses the Evangelisches Studienwerk, a prestigious scholarship foundation of the Protestant Church in Germany. The foundation supports approximately 1400 students and doctoral candidates across various disciplines, nurturing the intellectual growth of future generations. So, as you stand here, in the serene ambiance of Villigst, remember the echoes of its past, from medieval fortifications to a hub of academic excellence. Villigst quietly whispers its tales of growth and transformation, inviting you to explore its rich history and tranquil beauty.
