In 1884, the Tacony Baptist Church was founded. Then, in 1915, an unusual addition was made. The church incorporated discarded grindstones from the Disston Saw Works into its new wing. These stones once sharpened saws.
Reverend Tryon noticed the discarded grindstones. He asked Disston and Sons for permission to use them. The company agreed. Workers trimmed the stones. They incorporated them into the church’s design. Today, two round grindstones remain in the sidewalk. They remind visitors of the church’s unique history. It gained fame as the Grindstone Church.
The Tacony Baptist Church is the only sandstone church in North America built from industrial by-products. This makes it an architectural marvel. Its walls tell a story of innovation and community collaboration.
The church’s bell also has a rich history. Cast in Philadelphia in 1860, it first rang in Logan Square in 1864. There, it helped raise money for Civil War soldiers. Henry Disston later bought the bell for his factory. When the Laurel Street plant closed, the bell moved to Tacony. It sat in the yard until 1915. Since then, it has called the faithful to worship.
In March 2022, Reverend Evelyn Barnes became the pastor of Tacony Baptist Church. She stepped in after the previous pastor passed away. Reverend Barnes had close ties to the church. She volunteered to help during a difficult time. The congregation embraced her leadership. Before becoming pastor at Tacony Baptist Church, Rev. Barnes retired from a child welfare agency in Doylestown, Pa.
