Gazing up at this towering monument, one might wonder, “What secrets does the Erthal-Obelisk hold?” The Erthal-Obelisk, a striking 18-meter-high obelisk, dominates Erfurt’s Domplatz. It proudly stands as one of Erfurt’s oldest monuments. Erected around 1777, it commemorates the first visit of Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal. He was the Archbishop of Mainz and Erfurt’s ruler at the time. The obelisk whispers tales of a bygone era, a time when the citizens of Erfurt, in a display of loyalty, contributed 858 talers towards its construction. The total cost was 1120 talers. Crafted from Wandersleber sandstone, the obelisk rests on a sturdy granite base. This base is adorned with a laurel-wreathed portrait of Erthal, his name, coat of arms, initials, orders, and honorary insignia. Once, inscriptions proclaimed the citizens’ devotion, hailing Erthal as the “best father of the land.” They built this monument for “eternal memory”. Time and the elements have taken their toll. Weathering and lightning strikes have necessitated multiple restorations. A partial restoration took place in 1990, funded by private donations. In 2005, the base was repaired. Though faded, the inscription tablets tell a story. Modern photographic techniques have revealed the words dedicated to “the best father of the land,” Friedrich Carl Joseph. It details his many titles, including Archbishop of Mainz, Arch-Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire, and Prince-Bishop of Worms. It marks his birth date, January 3, 1719, his election date, July 18, 1774, and his visit to Erfurt on May 17, 1777. The inscription reflects the deep gratitude of Erfurt’s loyal citizens. They erected the Erthal-Obelisk in his honor. Today, the Erthal-Obelisk remains a testament to Erfurt’s rich history. It serves as a silent sentinel, watching over the bustling Domplatz.
