Founded in 1920 the Athens University of Economics and Business AUEB stands proudly on Patision Street. AUEB’s history is rich. It began as the Athens School of Commercial Studies. It later became the Athens School of Economics and Business. Its current name was adopted in 1989. The university holds a special place in Greek higher education. It’s the oldest university in Greece specializing in economics and business.

Initially AUEB offered only one degree in economics and commerce. This changed in 1955. The school extended its program to four years. Two distinct degrees emerged economics and business administration. The university’s growth continued. In 1984 it expanded to three departments: Economics Business Administration and Statistics and Business Informatics. The latter was renamed the Informatics Department in 1995.

AUEB continued its remarkable expansion. In 1989 it boasted six departments. Today AUEB has eight academic departments. They offer a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. These include master’s degrees and doctoral programs. AUEB is truly a center of academic excellence. It offers numerous courses in English mainly for international students participating in the Erasmus program.

In 2025 AUEB launched its first English-taught undergraduate program. This program the Bachelor in International Business & Technology is specifically designed for international students. It offers a unique curriculum blending business fundamentals and cutting-edge technology. This forward-thinking approach reflects AUEB’s commitment to innovation.

The main building of AUEB graces Patision Street. Other buildings are located in the vicinity. This main building holds a secret. Before 1922 it was the site of the first Panathinaikos Football Club ground. The current structure built in 1935 is a testament to the generosity of the Greek-Russian benefactor Grigorios Maraslis. AUEB’s impressive facilities include a library. The library houses over 100000 book titles and numerous academic journals. It has also undergone modernization partly financed by the European Community.

The university actively supports research. The faculty engages in both theoretical and applied research. The university is home to various research laboratories. It also fosters a vibrant student life. Many clubs and societies cater to diverse interests.
