Beneath the vast Nevada sky, a silent army stands at attention. The Nellis Air Force Base Solar Array, a shimmering expanse of photovoltaic panels, stretches across the desert floor. This isn’t just a power plant. It’s a testament to innovation and sustainability. Nellis Air Force Base Solar Array is a key player in the Air Force’s commitment to green energy. The Nellis Solar Array 1, built in 2007, covers 140 acres. It cleverly incorporates a former 33-acre landfill. This array alone generates enough power to supply more than 2,350 households. It saves Nellis Air Force Base $1 million annually and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 24,000 tons. In 2015, Nellis added a second array. Nellis Solar Array 2 spans 102 acres and provides 18.8 MW of power. This addition avoided another 17,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The construction of NSA 2 also brought a bonus. The Air Force received a new backup substation and electrical feeder worth $10 million in exchange for leasing the land. Together, Nellis Solar Array 1 and 2 form what is arguably the largest solar array in the Air Force. Their combined power output allows Nellis to operate entirely on solar energy during daylight hours. The Nellis Air Force Base Solar Array doesn’t just power the base. It also contributes to the local community. About 19% of the generated solar power goes off-grid. This provides electricity to around 900 homes in the surrounding area. When the sun sets, Nellis draws power from the Nevada Energy grid, ensuring a continuous supply of electricity. The Nellis Air Force Base Solar Array stands as a shining example of how renewable energy can power our future.
