Whispers carried on the wind. They spoke of a place called Nuoc Man Airbase. Nuoc Man Airbase, also known as Marble Mountain Air Facility, stands as a silent testament to a turbulent past. Nuoc Man Airbase played a crucial role during the Vietnam War. It began as a haven for helicopters in August 1965. The Marines of MAG-16 called this place home, alongside the 5th Special Forces Group and other squadrons. The airbase buzzed with activity. It was a vital hub for operations until May 1971. Control then shifted to the US Army. They held the reins until August 1972. Finally, the Republic of Vietnam Air Force took charge. Their control lasted until the fall of Da Nang on March 29, 1975. The People’s Army of Vietnam then claimed the base. Nuoc Man Airbase wasn’t just a strategic location. It was a stage for drama. On one October night in 1965, the Viet Cong launched a daring attack. Under the cover of mortar fire, they infiltrated the base. They managed to destroy nineteen aircraft and damage thirty-five more. This attack left a scar on Nuoc Man. It served as a grim reminder of the ever-present danger. The base also witnessed the arrival of new technology. The first CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters touched down here in March 1966. They brought a new dimension to the war effort. Nuoc Man Airbase also felt the tremors of the Tet Offensive. On January 31, 1968, rockets rained down on the facility. They caused damage and disruption, but the base endured. As the war wound down, the US began withdrawing its forces. By mid-October 1969, all remaining Marine helicopter squadrons were consolidated at Nuoc Man Airbase. It became a final staging point before departure. Today, Nuoc Man Airbase bears the marks of time. Commercial development has encroached upon its grounds. A highway now cuts through the former base. Only a few aircraft shelters remain as echoes of its past. Yet, the whispers remain. They tell the story of Nuoc Man Airbase, a place where history unfolded.
