“A bridge is more than just a structure of steel and concrete.” So begins the tale of Berlin’s Kronprinzenbrücke. The bridge gracefully spans the River Spree connecting the Tiergarten and Mitte districts.
Once upon a time this very spot was the site of division. The Spree marked a sector boundary during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall’s construction in 1961 led to the old bridge’s closure. It sadly lost its purpose. In 1972 East German officials demolished the bridge to prevent escapes to the West. Only the piers remained.
Fast forward to a reunited Berlin. The Kronprinzenbrücke rose again. It became a symbol of peace and reunification. A competition was held. Santiago Calatrava, a renowned architect, won the contest.
The present Kronprinzenbrücke opened in 1996. This elegant bridge carries Konrad-Adenauer-Straße. It features vehicle lanes, cycleways, and footpaths. The German Bundestag’s children’s nursery and the Spreebogenpark lie on its western end.
Notice the bridge’s unique design. Gerhard Sedlacek engineered a revolutionary support system. The elbows nearest the water are visible. This design avoids piers that would hinder river navigation.
The Kronprinzenbrücke is not very long. It stretches only 75.22 meters with a main span of 44 meters. The design gives the illusion of a skeletal steel arch bridge. However it uses lateral steel beams and inclined arches beneath the deck for support.
The bridge’s piers resist lateral thrusts because of the arch tilt. Inside the concrete there are large steel portal frames acting as ties.
Take a closer look at the arch spandrel elements. Observe the shaping of the thrust supports on the bridge piers. Appreciate the tilted parapets and the sculpted blocks at their ends. These details showcase fine craftsmanship.
The Kronprinzenbrücke is a testament to innovative engineering. The bridge’s design ensures both functionality and aesthetic appeal. However, some say that the underside of the bridge deck is given texture and form by the exposure of a large number of ribs and service pipes and feels over the top. The upper chords of the Vierendeel trusses are also absurdly large compared to the lower chords apparently only so that pipes can be hidden inside.
The original bridge built from 1877 to 1879 was named after Crown Prince Frederick William. It had three arches and a width of 22 meters. The center arch had an opening of 18.68 meters wide. The two outer arches were each 15.48 meters wide.
Consider the Kronprinzenbrücke not just as a crossing. It represents Berlin’s resilience and reunification. The Kronprinzenbrücke stands as a functional piece of art.
