Picture a small group of believers. They are from the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. They gather in a home in the Bronx. This humble beginning marks the start of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Woodlawn. The year is 1998. Their faith and determination lead to the official birth of Emmanuel Presbyterian Reformed Church on May 3rd.
Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Woodlawn quickly outgrows its first location. Just three weeks later it moves to a larger space. Twenty-five members celebrate this expansion. The church becomes a vibrant hub. It’s a center for community outreach and evangelism in the Bronx and Westchester County.
However Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Woodlawn’s journey is not without challenges. A significant split occurs in 2003. Eighty percent of the members leave to form a separate church. The remaining members face disappointment financial hardship and uncertainty. Despite these setbacks Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Woodlawn perseveres.
Then another challenge arises. Their leader Rev Andrew Aboagye accepts a new role in Ohio. The church loses its worship space. It faces a period of uncertainty and even struggles with access to its own funds. The congregation however unites in prayer. They work hard to overcome obstacles.
A dedicated team helps the church regain control of its assets. It begins a search for a new pastor. The church successfully affiliates with the Presbytery of New York and the Classis of New York. This collaboration proves invaluable. The church receives crucial support. This includes pulpit assistance grants and professional guidance.
In 2006 Rev Dr Kwame Amoah-Kuma becomes the church’s pastor. The church is chartered. Later Rev Dr Yaw Frimpong-Manso becomes its pastor. The church continues to grow. More challenges arise. Another division occurs in 2015. The COVID-19 pandemic further hinders its progress.
Yet Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Woodlawn continues. It rebuilds its facilities. It strengthens its ties with the community. It emphasizes communication forgiveness and strong leadership. It’s a testament to resilience. It’s a story of faith hope and unwavering community spirit. It’s a story worth remembering. This is Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Woodlawn. A church that overcame adversity. A beacon of hope and faith in the heart of Woodlawn.
