What comes to mind when you hear the name “Ben Hill”? Perhaps a bustling shopping center? A historical landmark? Here in Atlanta, Ben Hill is a neighborhood with a rich history, some might even say a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Located in southwest Atlanta, Ben Hill gets its name, not from a hill at all, but from a prominent figure in Georgia’s history: Benjamin Harvey Hill. But that’s a story for another time. Today, we’re focusing on the neighborhood he inspired. Now, you might have heard of Greenbriar Mall. This iconic shopping center stands as a landmark in Ben Hill. Back in the 70s and 80s, Greenbriar was the place to be, a vibrant hub with all the big-name stores. Sadly, over time, it faced a decline as many retailers moved towards the Camp Creek area. But don’t let that fool you, there’s still a spark here. Ben Hill is also home to a very special church, Ben Hill United Methodist Church. It holds the title of being, reportedly, the largest African American congregation within the United Methodist Church. That’s quite a feat! Ben Hill reminds us that neighborhoods, much like people, have their ups and downs. It’s a place where history and change intertwine, leaving their mark on the landscape and the community.
