Hidden amidst the vibrant chaos of Bhuleshwar Market, Suryenarayan Mandir stands as a serene sanctuary. It’s a beacon of tranquility, tucked away in the bustling heart of Mumbai. This Surya Mandir, dedicated to the Sun God, Surya Narayan, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith, healing, and the enduring power of the human spirit. The Suryenarayan Mandir’s story begins 117 years ago. A philanthropist named Harjivan Vasanji Maniar suffered from a debilitating skin ailment. He prayed to Surya, the ‘Aarogya-dev’, the deity of good health. Miraculously, he was cured. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Maniar envisioned a magnificent temple dedicated to Surya. He laid the foundation but sadly passed away before its completion. His wife, Radhabai, took up the mantle, ensuring her husband’s dream came to fruition. Today, the Suryenarayan Mandir is managed by a trust, honoring both Harjivan and Radhabai. The temple’s outer walls are adorned with a procession of rishis, each holding a unique object and displaying a distinct mudra. They seem to whisper blessings to visitors as they approach the sanctum. Inside, Surya Narayan reigns supreme, seated on a single-wheeled chariot driven by the devoted charioteer Aruna. Seven horses pull the chariot, symbolizing Surya’s journey across the sky. The sanctum is bathed in a celestial blue light, adding to the otherworldly atmosphere. A visit to Suryenarayan Mandir is more than just sightseeing. It’s an experience. It’s a moment to bask in the divine light, to feel the warmth of Surya’s energy, and to connect with a rich history of faith and healing. Even a brief visit can leave you feeling revitalized, reminding you of the power of belief. As you leave the Suryenarayan Mandir, you step back into the vibrant energy of Mumbai. But you carry with you a piece of the tranquility, a reminder of the quiet power that resides within this hidden gem. The temple is open from 6:00 am to 12:30 pm and then from 4:30 pm until sunset. If you wish to participate in the puja, it’s customary to wear white.
