Built between 1987 and 1989 the Rathaus am Stadtpark in Dortmund stands as a testament to modern architecture. Its imposing presence dominates the Friedensplatz. This isn’t just any town hall. It’s the heart of Dortmund’s civic life. It houses the city council and the mayor’s office.
The building’s design is striking. Its square shape is instantly noticeable. The main entrance faces the Friedensplatz. Two steel portals flank the entrance. They’re a nod to Dortmund’s history as a steel city. The reddish granite complements the Alte Stadthaus across the square. The paving stones of the Friedensplatz mirror the Rathaus’s geometry. This was a deliberate design choice.
At the core of the Rathaus is a magnificent Bürgerhalle. It’s 28 meters high. A glass dome crowns the hall. On the ground floor you’ll find exhibition rooms. They showcase Dortmund’s fascinating history. There’s even a Ratscafé for a relaxing break.
A grand double staircase leads to the parliamentary floor. Here sits the Ratssaal the council chamber. It boasts 138 seats. A curved glass facade symbolizes transparency. Council members sit in a semi-circle. They have a clear view of the Oberbürgermeister the mayor. A balcony on the second floor allows up to 140 spectators to observe council meetings. Beyond the main chamber the first floor has four additional meeting rooms. The upper floors house the mayor’s and council members’ offices.
The Rathaus’s construction wasn’t without its challenges. Dortmund’s council needed more space. The old town hall was too small. There was also a lack of suitable rooms for receptions and committee meetings. This led to intense debates in 1974/75. There were initial proposals to rebuild the old town hall. However the decision was made to create a new building.
A design competition was held. Dieter Käilberer’s modern design won. Despite economic hardship the council approved the new building. Construction began on January 5 1987. Mayor Günter Samtlebe laid the foundation stone on May 23 1987. The building was inaugurated on June 16 1989. It cost 62 million DM. The Friedensplatz’s redesign added another 10.5 million DM. The cost was not without controversy. Mayor Samtlebe called it a pantheon and a century’s work. Some Dortmunders nicknamed it the big beer crate. A fitting end to a long and eventful journey. The Rathaus am Stadtpark is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Dortmund’s resilience and civic pride.
