A school named after him. That’s how it began. The Melanchthon-Gymnasium in Berlin’s Hellersdorf district. It opened in 2008. Not a church not a monument but a school. This building holds the legacy of Philipp Melanchthon. A humanist theologian and reformer a giant in his time. The school was formed by merging the Leonard-Bernstein-Oberschule and the Max-Reinhardt-Gymnasium. Initially called “The New Gymnasium” it adopted its current name in 2013.
The Melanchthon-Gymnasium isn’t just an ordinary school. It boasts a strong focus on career and college preparation. The program includes internships and special courses. It’s designed to help students discover their passions and map their future paths. Elke Baumann a former acting deputy headmistress praised its effective systematic and practical approach.
Music plays a central role too. Special music profile classes are offered. These classes provide four hours of music instruction each week. They also include vocal and instrumental training. Students can further pursue their musical talents in the school’s choir orchestra and various bands.
Another unique feature is the school’s commitment to STEM education. They have special MINT classes for math information technology science and technology. These classes are very competitive students must pass an entrance exam. The demand for these programs has always outweighed availability. Since 2020 they also offer MINT classes in 7th grade.
The Melanchthon-Gymnasium also offers a rich selection of languages. Students can choose Spanish or French as a second language. Japanese or Latin are choices for a third language. Classes are often divided into smaller groups. This provides more individual attention. Third language classes are offered in 9th grade.
The school continually updates its facilities. In 2013 a major renovation project began. The schoolyard was redesigned. This cost around 1.27 million euros. Interactive whiteboards replaced traditional chalkboards. Computer labs and updated technology are available to students. The renovation also included the construction of a glass roof connecting two buildings. Illustrations of Melanchthon’s life and quotes grace the structure.
