The soaring dome a beacon against the Madrid sky. That’s the Parroquia de Santa Teresa y San José. A breathtaking sight isn’t it? This church isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and stained glass a testament to faith resilience and architectural brilliance.

For centuries Carmelites have sought solace within these walls. Their journey began in 1586 at the Convent of San Hermenegildo. But the winds of change swept through Spain. The disestablishment of Mendizábal in 1836 forced their expulsion. They lost their convent like so many others. Hope flickered only in the Desert of the Palms a remote sanctuary.

Undeterred the Carmelites returned to Madrid in 1876. A small chapel on Calle Evaristo San Miguel served as their temporary home. Their dream a grand new convent and church finally took shape on a plot of land in Plaza de España. The cornerstone was laid on April 28 1916 the centenary of Santa Teresa’s birth. Construction however didn’t begin until 1923.

The architect Jesús Carrasco-Muñoz drew inspiration from Santa Teresa de Jesús’s “Interior Castle”. The result? A magnificent structure blending medieval and modernist styles. The building is a fortress a testament to faith against the backdrop of modern Madrid. It’s an eclectic masterpiece a true reflection of its time. Its imposing facade stands in stark contrast to the surrounding modern buildings.

The church suffered during the Spanish Civil War. A devastating fire destroyed much of the interior. It underwent extensive restoration after the war. The Parroquia de Santa Teresa y San José served as a parish church from 1965 to 2016. It even housed a nursing home for many years a testament to its role in the community. Now it continues as a place of worship and prayer under the parish of San Marcos.

Look closely at the stunning dome. It’s Byzantine in style adorned with vibrant polychrome tiles. This remarkable ceramic work was commissioned by the Marchioness of Floresta and created by the renowned ceramist Daniel Zuloaga. The original plans even called for a colossal 95-meter-high tower topped with a statue of Santa Teresa. Sadly that vision remained unrealized.

Step inside the Parroquia de Santa Teresa y San José. Marvel at the spacious nave the magnificent altarpiece and the soft light filtering through the stained-glass windows. These windows are a testament to the artistry of Casa Maumejean. These details the grandeur of the interior the history echoing in the very stones are what make this place so special.
