Lost in the rhythm of Manhattan a whisper of history echoes from the past. Right here stands the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church a testament to faith and community. This wasn’t always a quiet place of worship.
The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church holds a special place in the heart of New York City. Its story began in 1914. A vibrant Italian-American community needed a spiritual home. Right Rev Msgr Joseph Congedo a priest who arrived in the US in 1905 took on the challenge. He established the parish to serve a population of around 10000 people. Initially masses were held in the basement of another church St Gabriel’s.
The construction of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church itself is quite a story. A plot of land was acquired in 1915. Four buildings were demolished to make way for this new church. Architect Nicholas Serracino designed a beautiful stone and brick structure costing around $35000. Cardinal John M Farley laid the cornerstone in 1915. The church was completed by December 1915. The first mass was held on January 30 1916. Archbishop Giovanni Bonzano dedicated the church on October 1 1916.
The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a center for the community. A school was built next door in 1925. Immaculata High School thrived for many years. It provided education to the children of the parish. It later housed other schools too. The church also played an important role during difficult times. When St Gabriel’s Church closed in 1939 part of its congregation joined the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.
Sadly in January 2007 the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church closed. It was merged with another parish. The church and its school were demolished. A developer replaced them with a 12-story condominium building.
However the story of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church didn’t end there. A new chapel was built on the site of the old convent. It bears the same name. Cardinal Edward Egan who had overseen the closing of the church was involved in this too. He lived there until his death in 2015 and dedicated the chapel in May 2010. This small chapel continues to serve a purpose. It’s a place of meditation a home for alumni of the high school and a quiet space near major medical centers. It’s a reminder of a vibrant past and a continuing spiritual presence in the heart of Manhattan. The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church may have changed but its spirit endures.
