Here, on Melrose Avenue, stands Hope Lutheran Church. It’s more than just a building. It is a testament to resilience. It is a beacon of faith.

In 1983, tragedy struck Hope Lutheran Church. A fire, an act of arson, reduced it to ashes. The congregation faced a difficult choice. Should they abandon their site of 41 years? Should they merge with another church?

But they chose to stay. They decided to rebuild. They wanted to be a symbol of hope for the community.

Pastor Mark Rasbach inspired them. He shared Jesus’ parable of the talents. He gave each of the 120 members $10. He instructed them to use their talents to make the money grow.

The congregation responded with creativity. A historian led tours of Melrose Avenue. A chiropractor offered checkups for donations. Rasbach himself served a seven-course meal for $50 a head. In two weeks, they raised $47,000.

Even during rebuilding, they worshiped on the charred site. Sometimes, they worshiped under a tent. They wore hard hats when necessary.

Their money-raising efforts became a tradition. The most famous project was a sand sculpture. Todd Vanderpluym created a 160-ton rendition of ancient Jerusalem. It was unveiled on Palm Sunday in 1986.

In 1985, a new church arose from the ashes. The 15,000-square-foot structure represented more than just bricks and mortar. It symbolized a new sense of identity.

Since the fire, Hope Lutheran Church has reached out to the community. It houses service and social activities. There are a dozen 12-step groups for recovering addicts. They offer a high-risk infant care program. There is also child care. A resource center supports battered women and children. An emergency food program is available.

Membership has more than doubled since 1983. It has grown to nearly 300 members. Hope Lutheran Church was originally Methodist. It was located about a mile away. It moved to Melrose in 1926.

Today, Hope Lutheran Church continues its mission. It proclaims Jesus as Lord and Savior. It stands on the teachings of the Bible. The church focuses on the salvation of souls. It provides a welcoming community. Pastor Steven Gabb and his family invite you to join them. They have been at Hope since 2007.

Hope Lutheran Church is not just a place of worship. It is a symbol of hope. It is a testament to the power of community. It is a reminder that even from ashes, something beautiful can rise. Remember the story of the fire. Remember the sand sculpture. Remember the spirit of Hope Lutheran Church.
