Lost in the mists of time Lezayre whispers tales of ancient landscapes. This isn’t just any parish. Lezayre is a place of contrasts. It’s the garden of the Isle of Man. Picture rolling green hills fertile fields. Yet it also holds the island’s highest point Snaefell. A majestic peak reaching towards the sky.

Lezayre formally known as Kirk Christ Lezayre is one of the Isle of Man’s seventeen historic parishes. It stretches across twenty-two square miles a vast expanse. The name itself meaning ‘of’ ‘at’ or ‘towards’ the Ayre. This refers to the traditional North Side division. A hint of the area’s rich history and its position within the island.

Imagine the early inhabitants. They lived alongside now drained lakes. Lough Malor for example was once a mile long. As these lakes disappeared land emerged. This land revealed amazing fossils. Remains of ancient elk and even fossil trees. A glimpse into the Isle of Man’s distant past.

The southern part is rugged. It’s filled with soaring mountains. Snaefell North Barrule and others dominate the skyline. These form part of the famous TT course. The mountains aren’t just dramatic scenery. They define the character of Lezayre. They shaped the lives of its people.

Lezayre has a captivating river the Sulby River. It’s the longest river on the island. The Sulby River starts high on Snaefell. It carves its way down through Glen Mooar. The river reaches the northern plain eventually flowing into the sea at Ramsey. This waterway connects the mountains with the coastal lowlands. It was a lifeline for generations.

The parish boasts several churches. Kirk Christ Lezayre the parish church was built in 1835. A beautiful stained glass window by Daniel Cottier adds beauty to the building. Yet sadly this church was closed in 2013. The diocese now seeks a buyer. Other churches like St Stephen’s Sulby and St Fingan’s in Glen Auldyn add to Lezayre’s spiritual heritage. These places are more than buildings. They are markers of faith and community life.

Lezayre’s population has fluctuated over time. The 2016 census recorded 1276 inhabitants. This was slightly less than the number counted in 2011. It tells us about the quiet life of this remote yet deeply rooted parish.

This is Lezayre. A place that combines stunning landscapes a rich history. A place where the past and present blend seamlessly together. A place you won’t soon forget.
