Hidden within Hanover lies Wettbergen. It first appeared in records in 1055. Its name, derived from the Old Saxon word “Hvat” meaning sharp, translates to “village on a steep slope”. Wettbergen was the ancestral seat of the noble von Wettberg family. This family died out in Lower Saxony during the 17th century. Wettbergen today is a blend of old and new. The Hamelner Chaussee (B 217) divides the original village core, which retains its rural character, from the newer Wettbergen-West. This residential area, developed in the 1980s and 1990s, features rows of houses, detached homes, and four-story apartment buildings. Interestingly, this land was initially intended for expanding the Mühlenberg district. However, Mühlenberg had gained a negative reputation. The city also shifted its focus from large housing estates to suburban single-family homes. So Wettbergen, with its more middle-class structure, became the chosen location. Wettbergen boasts excellent educational facilities. The district itself houses the Wettbergen Elementary School and the Henning-von-Tresckow Elementary School. Within a 3 km radius, there are three large comprehensive schools: IGS Mühlenberg, KGS Hemmingen, and KGS Ronnenberg. Each school has over 1500 students. Since 1999, Wettbergen has been the terminus for city tram lines 3 and 7. Nature lovers appreciate Wettbergen’s proximity to the Wettberger Holz. It’s one of Hanover’s green lungs. This village-like, family-friendly district, situated on the city’s edge, holds much potential for future development. As of 2019, Wettbergen had a population of 13,278 residing in 6,376 dwellings. The district covers an area of 498 hectares.
