Did you know Riverside Baptist Church’s story begins long before its current location? It started in 1857 as the Island Baptist Church a small Sunday school led by Chastain Clarke Meador. This was a wooden structure moved from another site. Imagine the humble beginnings of this vibrant church. Meador became the first pastor of 24 charter members.
The early years of Riverside Baptist Church were marked by challenges. The Civil War brought financial hardship. Meador even opened a hardware store to supplement his income. His Confederate sympathies caused some conflict within the congregation. Despite these difficulties both the church and the Union survived.
A religious revival in 1866 brought a surge of new members. Over 150 people professed conversion. The church needed more space. In 1869 a new brick structure was built. The church was renamed Fifth Baptist Church. This reflects a period of growth through evangelism teaching and social ministry. The church even started a city mission and supported a foreign missionary. This shows their expanding reach and commitment.
A legal battle with a railroad led to a relocation in 1902. Joseph James Darlington a church member won a Supreme Court case against the railroad. The settlement funded the move to a new building. This new location spurred continued growth under several pastors. By 1957 Fifth Baptist boasted the second-largest Sunday school in the city with over 600 members.
Urban redevelopment forced another move in the 1960s. The old site was bought by the Redevelopment Land Agency. The congregation temporarily worshipped in Hogate’s Restaurant. This transition was difficult. Only a small number of members made the move to the new location. Due to its riverside location it was renamed Riverside Baptist Church.
The 1970s brought new leadership and challenges. Rev Frank Foster fostered a truly biracial congregation. Sadly his untimely death in a plane crash was a major setback. The church persevered under interim leadership. Rev Robert Troutman’s fourteen years saw new directions. He led initiatives in affordable housing. The church joined the Progressive Baptist Convention. Youth programs thrived.
The late 1980s and beyond saw continued change. Rev William Smith fostered community outreach. Riverside faced new social issues particularly LGBTQ+ inclusion. Rev Michael Bledsoe became pastor in 1992. Riverside disassociated itself from the Southern Baptist Convention affirming its inclusivity. His tenure included innovative programs.
Riverside Baptist Church continued to evolve. In 2022 Rev Mia Michelle McClain became the first African American woman to serve as Senior Pastor. She leads the church into a vibrant future. Today Riverside Baptist Church stands as a testament to resilience faith and community. Its rich history reflects both struggle and triumph. It remains a beacon of hope and service in its community.
