“Largest green space” is what they call it here. The Stadtteilpark Linden-Süd stretches along the Ihme riverbank. This 2.6-hectare park is a true gem in Linden-Süd.
In September 2016 citizen participation shaped the Stadtteilpark Linden-Süd. It transformed a previously overgrown area into a vibrant space. The park sits between Legionsbrücke and the former skin clinic.
For 1.62 million euros this multi-generational park was created. The Region Hannover contributed 230.000 euros to the project.
The Stadtteilpark Linden-Süd offers something for everyone. It is fully accessible. You will find a basketball court and a free-flow arena. Skaters and BMX riders love it here. There is even a fitness area. It provides demanding exercise options.
If you seek relaxation you will find it here too. Benches are nestled among large oaks, alders, chestnuts, and beeches. You can sit on stone steps right by the Ihme’s bank.
Landscape architect Gwendolyn Kusters designed the park benches. They invite you to linger. However the Stadtteilpark Linden-Süd has a drawback. It is prone to flooding. The Ihme has flooded it several times.
The park boasts diverse sports facilities. A basketball court, a skate park, and a fitness area await you. Fitness equipment includes leg trainers and shoulder trainers. You can also find whole-body trainers and back trainers.
An intensive citizen participation process shaped the park’s design. From 2013 to 2018 various meetings took place. Guidelines were developed for the first construction phase. The park should be usable for all ages. A focus on play and sport was desired. Access to the water was a must. The park should be accessible to everyone.
Expert groups refined the ideas from the citizen meetings. This is how the skate pool and basketball court became part of the plan. The community positively reviewed the preliminary design in July 2014.
The park is divided into three distinct zones. Two “park” zones preserve the green character. They cover 13.000 of the 16.000 square meters. These zones surround the “play and sport” zone.
Two rectangular platforms offer space for ball sports and skating. Hannover’s first public basketball court is here. You’ll also find the city’s first public skate pool. A fitness course caters to various exercise needs. There is even a climbing forest for advanced athletes.
Special seating areas invite you to experience the Ihme. They are accessible to everyone. These spots offer views of the water. The southernmost spot is designed for people with limited mobility. It allows sitting directly by the water.
Barrier-free access ensures everyone can enjoy the park. The Ihme-Blick-Süd enhances the southern entrance. A 60-meter ramp leads into the park. It winds around the large trees.
The former steep access to the sports field is now closed. A small plateau with benches now stands there. It also provides space for a portable toilet. The skate pool is now connected to Auestraße. This is done via a seating step system. The table tennis tables were integrated back into the design.
The city of Hanover oversaw the project. Construction began in September 2016. The Stadtteilpark Linden-Süd opened in January 2018. It is a place that builds identity for young and old. It integrates leisure, sports, and recreation. People now widely enjoy the area. The Stadtteilpark Linden-Süd has become a cherished space.
