Earthquake! The very ground beneath us shuddered in 1743. This catastrophic event, while devastating, paved the way for the Basilica di San Martino you see today. The original structure, weakened by the tremors, was deemed unfit. A decision was made to erect a new church, one that would reflect the architectural trends of the 18th century. The Basilica di San Martino was thus reborn, a testament to resilience and artistic vision. The Milanese architect Giuseppe Mariani was tasked with designing this grand edifice. The foundation stone was laid, and after thirty years of meticulous work, the Basilica di San Martino was consecrated on October 22, 1775. Cast your gaze upwards to the majestic facade, a towering 37 meters high. Notice the semi-circular staircase, an invitation to ascend and explore. The facade is divided into two architectural orders. Decorative elements, carved from local stone, create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. At the heart of this ornate display is a sculptural masterpiece by Joseph Morgese. It depicts St. Martin, the church’s namesake, performing his iconic act of charity: sharing his cloak with a beggar. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself in a vast and luminous space. The Basilica di San Martino is designed in the shape of a Latin cross. The presbytery, located beneath the triumphal arch designed by Gennaro Sammartino, houses a remarkable marble altar. Crafted in 1773 by Giuseppe Sammartino, the same artist who sculpted the Veiled Christ in Naples, this altar holds a special treasure. Look closely, and you’ll see a 16th-century stone sculpture of San Martin of Tours by Stefano da Putignano. The elaborate marble work surrounding the sculpture is the creation of Neapolitan craftsman Giuseppe Variale. Admire the angels holding San Martin’s episcopal emblems. Note the nimbus of the Holy Spirit and the allegorical figures of Charity and Abundance, flanking the sculpture. This grand marble ensemble was a gift from a local nobleman, Pietro Simeone, whose family crest is subtly inlaid in the marble shields below the allegorical figures. The Basilica di San Martino is more than just a building. It’s a vessel of history, artistry, and faith.
