Picture the year 1231. The name Scerenbeke appears for the first time in official records. This is the very beginning of Samtgemeinde Scharnebeck’s story. This unassuming name would one day signify a region known for its remarkable ship lift and rich history.

Samtgemeinde Scharnebeck is nestled in Lower Saxony north of Lüneburg. It’s a place where history and modern engineering meet. Its location west of the Elbe Heights-Wendland Nature Park offers scenic beauty. The area has a long and fascinating past. The story of Samtgemeinde Scharnebeck is inextricably linked to its former Cistercian monastery.

Founded in 1253 the Scharnebeck monastery shaped the Elbe Marsch region for over 300 years. The monastery’s influence was immense. The Reformation in 1531 brought its dissolution. However its legacy remains. Only decades after the Thirty Years’ War ended the once proud monastery church became dilapidated. The community couldn’t maintain such a large structure. Around 1712 it was demolished. Luckily some remnants of the monastery are still visible around St Marien church.

A remarkable survivor stands testament to the monastery’s past. Built in 1510 from brick and oak half-timbering the Scharnebeck domain granary is the last completely preserved building of the Cistercian monastery. Today it houses the Lüneburg Region Adult Education Centre. The former monastery ponds and the mill pond along with the animal park form a picturesque recreational area perfect for strolls.

Samtgemeinde Scharnebeck also includes the rural districts of Nutzfelde and Lentenau. These small villages add to the charm of this special region.

The most famous landmark of Samtgemeinde Scharnebeck is undoubtedly its ship lift. Opened on December 5 1975 after seven years of construction it’s Germany’s largest double vertical ship lift. It’s called the Lüneburg ship lift. This amazing structure lifts ships 38 meters. It can even transport two ships simultaneously. The lift’s impressive size is truly awe-inspiring.
