Norwood United Methodist Church

Whispers of faith echo through the Norwood United Methodist Church. They carry tales of a community’s devotion. Norwood United Methodist Church stands at the corner of Chester Pike and Ridley Avenue. It has witnessed the changing landscape of Norwood since its early days. Methodism first took root in Norwood in March 1888. A mission, established by the Prospect Park Methodist Church, began in the old Norwood Hotel on Ridley Avenue. The congregation quickly outgrew this space. Driven by faith and community spirit, they formed the Norwood Church Building Association. Mrs. William Hazzard generously donated land and lumber. The men of the community, working tirelessly by night, erected a temporary chapel in just two weeks. The Ladies Aid Society was organized soon after. The first Trustees were elected, marking the official establishment of Norwood Methodist Church. The congregation continued to expand. A cornerstone was laid on November 14, 1888, for a new church building. This building was dedicated in April 1898. Seeking a more central location, the church was moved to its current location at Chester Pike and Ridley Avenue in 1908. The cornerstone was relocated on December 13, 1908. Growth necessitated another expansion. Ground was broken for the current structure on June 7, 1924. The cornerstone was laid on August 17, 1924. The building was dedicated on November 1, 1925. A religious education building was added in 1955, further reflecting the church’s commitment to nurture faith. Norwood United Methodist Church has been more than just a building. It has served as a spiritual anchor. It has been a place of fellowship and service. The church’s history is intertwined with the history of Norwood itself. The legacy of faith continues.
