Picture this. A bustling Bronx neighborhood. The year is 1924. Holy Mass is celebrated in an old movie theater. This wasn’t just any Mass. It was the start of something special. The beginning of the Church of Saint Dominic. A burgeoning Italian community needed a place of worship. A place to gather. A place to connect with their faith. And so they built this church.

The Church of Saint Dominic stands tall on Unionport Road in Van Nest. It’s a Romanesque Revival style building. Bronx-native architect Anthony J DePace designed it. The construction began on May 31 1925. It wasn’t just bricks and mortar though. It was a testament to faith and community.

Imagine the dedication in 1927. Patrick Cardinal Hayes Archbishop of New York officially dedicated the Church of Saint Dominic. It joined Our Lady of Solace Church. Both were vital parts of the growing Irish and Italian communities. In the 1950s a school and convent were added. This expanded the church’s impact on the neighborhood.

Life at the Church of Saint Dominic wasn’t without its challenges. In 2011 two bells were removed. Water damage threatened the wooden supports. The repairs cost an estimated $30000. The community rallied to support this work. The bells are back now. They ring out proudly. A symbol of resilience.

The Church of Saint Dominic’s school closed in 2011. This was a difficult time. After 59 years it was part of the Archdiocese of New York’s reconfiguration. Yet the church itself continues to thrive. It is a vibrant hub. A place where faith flourishes.

In 2007 the Church of Saint Dominic merged with Our Lady of Solace. They formed one parish with two churches. The Idente Missionaries now administer the parish. A single community bound by a shared faith.

Today the Church of Saint Dominic continues its mission. It provides a space for spiritual growth. A sense of belonging. More than a building it’s a living testament. A testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. A true Bronx treasure. A place where history and hope intertwine. This is the Church of Saint Dominic.
