Elevated above the city, the City Tabernacle has witnessed Brisbane’s transformation since 1890. This magnificent structure isn’t just a church; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Brisbane’s Baptist community and a landmark in the city’s skyline. The City Tabernacle stands proudly on Wickham Terrace, overlooking the bustling heart of Brisbane. Its story begins in 1887, when the Wharf Street Baptist Church, Brisbane’s first Baptist congregation, outgrew its humble premises. Richard Gailey, a prominent Brisbane architect and devout member of the congregation, stepped forward to design their new home, offering his services free of charge. The City Tabernacle, completed in 1890 at a cost exceeding £18,000, was a bold statement of faith. While Gothic architecture was the trend, Gailey chose a striking Classical design. The imposing tower, topped with a cupola, dominated Brisbane’s skyline for many years. Each facade of the City Tabernacle is a symphony of classical elements, featuring magnificent rose windows and a centrally planned layout. The interior is equally breathtaking. A double-height nave, 21 meters wide, welcomes worshippers. Cedar pews, arranged in a semicircle, focus on the pulpit, baptistery, organ, and choir gallery. The timber trusses, concealed by a flat plaster ceiling, span this grand space. The City Tabernacle has served as more than just a place of worship. In its early days, the basement housed Miss Fewing’s Private School for Girls, later to become Somerville House. The tower accommodated the Baptist Theological College and a minister’s fraternal meeting place. The basement also hosted Sunday school and other church activities. The City Tabernacle remains a vital hub for the Baptist Church in Queensland, hosting the annual Assembly and other important gatherings. Its history is interwoven with the growth of the Baptist faith in Queensland, and it stands as a enduring symbol of their commitment to Brisbane. The City Tabernacle isn’t just a building; it’s a living story. It’s a story of faith, community, and architectural brilliance.
