The scent of old stone and incense hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to the Igreja de São Tomé de Covelas. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to centuries of faith and artistry.

Built sometime between the medieval and baroque periods the Igreja de São Tomé de Covelas boasts a rectangular design. A nave a chancel a bell tower and a sacristy on the right side compose its structure. The interior ceilings are a marvel. They are cleverly designed as false barrel vaults in the main area and paneled in the sacristy. Light streams in through rectangular and arched windows along the sides.

Notice the main facade. Its gable is broken by elegant volutes. The portal is a simple straight arch topped by a polygonal window. The facades themselves are flanked by pilastered buttresses accented by pinnacles. They’re finished with decorative friezes and cornices. The bell tower a single body stands tall. It’s capped with a cornice supported by corbels and perfect arched windows.

Step inside. You’ll see a high choir loft. A baptismal font sits elevated on the Gospel side. The side chapels hold baroque carved altarpieces. The triumphal arch is a perfect arc with beveled edges. Flanking it are mannerist carved altarpieces. The main altarpiece is likely from the 1900s.

The interior walls are plastered and painted white. The nave’s ceiling is a beautiful illusion a false barrel vault painted to mimic the night sky. An oval panel depicts a wooden cross surrounded by symbols of the Passion.

Each detail tells a story. The granite stonework. The carved wood. The painted details. Every element speaks of the devotion and skill of those who built and decorated this incredible church.
