“Opened in 1982.” Does that simple phrase hint at the story behind Kyoto Family? It is more than just a shopping center. Kyoto Family is located in Ukyo Ward Kyoto. It stands as a testament to changing times.

Let us explore its history together. Kyoto Family started as a joint venture. Diamond City now AEON Mall and Kintetsu Department Store were the initial investors. It was conceived as a two-core mall. Kintetsu Department Store and Jusco Kyoto Nishi Store were the main tenants. This marked a significant development. It was only the second such mall of its type.

However, changes were ahead. Kintetsu Department Store withdrew in 1995 due to poor performance. The mall was then reorganized around Jusco Kyoto Nishi Store. In 2011, Jusco Kyoto Nishi Store changed its name. It became AEON Kyoto Nishi Store. Diamond Family was absorbed by Diamond City in 2006. Later, Diamond City was merged with AEON Mall in 2007.

The operations of Kyoto Family were transferred. AEON Mall managed it until February 2013. In March 2013, the property was owned by a fund. Mitsubishi Corporation-related Japan Retail Fund Investment Corporation was the new owner. From April 2014, Sumisho Urban Development Corporation took over management.

Kyoto Family has undergone several renovations. These renovations happened in 2004, 2010 and 2013. Today, the shopping center spans from the first to the third floor. It features around 70 specialty stores.

The core store is AEON Kyoto Nishi store. It occupies only the first floor. Getting to Kyoto Family is convenient. You can reach it from Nishinomiya Station or Yamanouchi Station. Both are about a 10-minute walk away.

Kyoto Family has adapted to survive. Ownership and management have shifted. The stores have changed over time. Yet, it continues to serve the local community. It stands as a retail hub in Ukyo Ward. Kyoto Family remains a place for shopping and community interaction.
