From its humble beginnings in a log cabin in 1834 Wesley United Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This Charleston institution began as a small congregation. Its members met in a simple log cabin. As the church grew services moved to a building on 10th Street and Van Buren. This building also served as a schoolhouse. A later stone church built at 9th Street and Monroe in 1895 met a tragic end. Two devastating fires destroyed it in 1914 and again in 1995. The current location on Fourth Street became home to Wesley United Methodist Church in 1967. This move allowed the church to better serve its expanding congregation. It also served Eastern Illinois University students and staff. Wesley United Methodist Church is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant community. The church embraces the Three Simple Rules given by John Wesley. These are do no harm do good and stay in love with God. Many church members have served as community leaders. Others quietly practice mission and social justice projects. The church’s history is filled with challenges and triumphs. It has always been a place of spiritual growth and community support. Wesley United Methodist Church’s legacy continues today. It remains an active part of the Charleston community. Its doors are open to all who seek spiritual nourishment and fellowship. So step inside and feel the warmth of this historic church. Let its rich history touch your heart.
