Kinder Sculpture

Gazing upon the Kindertransport memorial, the Kinder Sculpture, a wave of emotion washes over you. This poignant artwork outside Berlin’s Friedrichstraße station captures a heartbreaking moment in history. The Kinder Sculpture, also known as “Trains to Life – Trains to Death,” commemorates the 10,000 children saved by the Kindertransport. These children escaped Nazi persecution between 1938 and 1939. Imagine the scene in 1938. Families torn apart, children boarding trains with a mix of hope and fear. The Kinder Sculpture depicts two groups of children. One group heads west, towards life and uncertain futures in England. The other group symbolizes the tragic fate of the countless children who perished in the Holocaust. The Kinder Sculpture’s creator, Frank Meisler, was himself a Kindertransport child. He traveled from Berlin to England in 1939. This personal experience adds a layer of depth and authenticity to the artwork. Sadly, the Kinder Sculpture has been targeted by vandals. In 2024, antisemitic graffiti marred the bronze figures. This act of desecration serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against hate and intolerance. The Kinder Sculpture stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It reminds us of the importance of remembrance and the need to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
