Nikolay Popov designed the tank with the new turbine engine. It was designated Object 219 SP1. It was a T-64T powered by a 1000 hp gas turbine engine. Trials showed the need for a suspension redesign. The second prototype Object 219 SP2 had bigger drive sprockets. It also had more road wheels. Its turret used the same gun autoloader and ammunition as the T-64A.
In 1976 the Object 219-2 was accepted for production as the T-80. In 1978 the Object 219R became the T-80B. It had composite armor. Production of the original T-80 ended that year. The T-80B entered production at Omsktransmash in 1979.
Some Western analysts initially confused the T-80 with the T-72. However the T-80 is based on the T-64. The T-72 was a complementary design. The T-80 is longer than the T-64. The T-80 and T-72 are mechanically different. The T-72 is simpler to manufacture and service.
The T-80 improved on the T-64 design. It used a gas turbine engine. This gave it a high power-to-weight ratio. It was the most mobile tank in service. Its turbine consumed fuel rapidly. The T-80U had a 1250 hp gas turbine. It could fire the 9K112 Kobra anti-tank guided missile.
